MEMORIAL UNION BUILDING EXPANSION

Following completion of an in-depth study, the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union commissioned SEPW as architectural consultant and PCL-Maxam, Joint Venture of Saskatoon as construction managers to design and construct an 1,800 sq.m. ± expansion to the Memorial Union Building as the first phase of expanding student services on campus.  A nine month design and construction window created extremely tight timelines.  Fast track construction and efficient consultant co-ordination were required to meet these demands.

The project included a below grade expansion to Louis’ Pub to increase its existing capacity and to create new kitchen, administrative, and multi-purpose spaces.  The existing rooftop deck was also expanded.  Extensive mechanical and electrical upgrades were required and were relocated from an existing penthouse at deck level to a new pavilion complete with loading areas, freight elevator, and washrooms.  The aesthetic of the expansion and the new mechanical pavilion draws extensively from the Collegiate Gothic architecture of the existing building.  The addition is so sympathetic to the existing building and site that many patrons have deemed the project “Mini MUB”.
